MUSIC REVIEW: New single, W.Y.N.A by No Hot Ashes

No Hot Ashes are a four-piece band from Stockport, Greater Manchester, and they have been around the local music scene since 2012 – making a name for themselves having supported the likes of Blossoms and The Amazons. They are signed to Modern Sky records but a little surprisingly this year will see their debut album being released – ‘Hardship Starship’ which is scheduled for release in August.

The band is made up of Isaac Taylor on vocals / guitar, Luigi Di Vuono on guitar / backing vocals, Jack Walsh on bass and Matthew Buckley on drums.

Their latest single is “W.Y.N.A” which is “Why You’re Not Around” – I’m not sure why the abbreviation is required – and the first thing you get when listening to the track is a likeable charm, it somehow feels familiar and like something you have pulled out of your record collection despite it being brand new. The style is much like their previous releases and has been described as post-pop-disco funk – a term I have never heard before but I like how it describes No Hot Ashes. The track was produced by Chris Taylor (The Coral and Everything Everything) and you can definitely hear Taylor’s influence on the final product.

The song is about “kicking off with loved ones, sleep deprivation and the cyclical nature of relationships” – it was originally written as an acoustic number but they played it one day as a full band and liked it so much it became a single release. It’s hard to imagine this as an acoustic track and I definitely think this works so much better in its current form.

It feels like No Hot Ashes could be about to break out with their debut album, they definitely have mainstream appeal – they are not going to be confined to the underground music scene. They have a tour later this year and are headlining at The Ritz in Manchester which is not a small venue – there is no doubt they are really going for it with the backing of their record company. This could be a big year for No Hot Ashes so without doubt watch this space.
