MUSIC REVIEW: Debut single Fireworks - Magdalen

Magdalen is a singer / songwriter from Manchester who describes her own sound as “Dreamy, homemade pop” which is a description I like very much. She has only been around for about a year and whilst I won’t go as far as saying she has a unique sound, it is as close to being unique as anything else I have heard in the last few years.
Her voice has a real melodic charm about it that it is hard not to get absorbed the moment she starts to sing – she attracts your attention but so subtly that you hardly realise it. It is almost hypnotic.

Her latest single release is “Fireworks” and she herself describes it as “about being young and seeking thrills and new experiences but also a lot of joy, naïve wonder and connection with others”. This is without doubt her best work to date and feels like a real breakthrough track for Magdalen. It isn’t a mainstream sound that will get her radio station airplay but I sense this isn’t what she is trying to achieve at this point in her career – she is producing music that she enjoys, music that she feels proud of and if anyone listens then that’s a bonus.

This is Magdalen’s debut single and I am very much looking forward to the next. She has a huge amount of potential and I can see her really growing into herself over the next few years, it’s hard to know exactly what direction she will take but I definitely want to see how it develops. If she continues to produce music like “Fireworks” then she will definitely stand out – it’s hard to know who her influences are but she could very well be influencing others in years to come.
