FILM REVIEW: Culture Vulture #3 - Bolton Film Festival

Two more films in Bolton Film Festival's online showing this year in their 'Culture Vulture' section.

1. 10/6 - USA - Dir: William Nawrocki

This is a hugely experimental film showcasing the fashion clothes of designer Nigel Moore from his JNIGEL S/S11 Collection. At 11 minutes and 30 seconds long, the film is in 7 short parts which are all through-connected. Apparently using the theme of  'Alice Through The Looking Glass' as his starting point, Nawrocki takes the viewer on a journey of the senses through different landscapes as a man meets different 'spirits' in the different locations. My favourite shot though came in the 4th section which showed shafts of light penetrating through the branches of a large tree adorned with shutter and window frames. Highly artistic and beautifully lit. If the idea was first and foremost to showcase the couture, then it is mission accomplished for this film.

2. Never Look At The Sun - France - Dir: Baloji

Voiceover: We are told we should never look at the sun.....

This short film explores a phenomenon of which I was unaware; that of black women wanting to whiten their skin colouring in order to feel more European and to 'fit in'.  The film challenges us to define 'beauty' and that black skin is beautiful in its darkness, which has been forged from the sun's energy.

Many black women bleach their skin and this is a cri-du-coeur for this to stop.

Written, directed and performed by Baloji.
