FILM REVIEW: Student Animation - Bolton Film Festival

I am not a massive fan of animation in any form, however there were two student animations in this year's festival which were both receiving their UK Premieres and so I gave them both a watch.

1. Right Now, I Am - UK - Dir: Clara Kerr

Farnham University Animation Studio produced this intriguing and abstract piece which is Clara Kerr's own story. It's an autobiographical and emotional journey through her past self to the present time. At least that is what we are told in the advertising to the film.

In reality it is far more abstract than that. Mostly in black and white, she is always drawn naked which obviously symbolises something but am uncertain what; and the repeated use of feather and bird in flight are rather obvious motifs for her self and her journey.

Without dialogue, voiceover, or some other help with the narrative though the content is too abstract: perhaps because of the personal nature of this film, that is deliberate.

2. Lushfullness - Poland - Dir: Weronika Szyma

A young woman meets her mirror reflection; but her body image worries turn into a journey of self discovery and exploration as her fantasies come to life.

Starting in white pencil on black, there is no dialogue but a lush cinematic soundtrack throughout. The animation turns into bright colours as her fantasies and sexual proclivities and ecstasydevelop. It turns back to the white pencil drawing on black at the end when the woman realises that her fantasy and her self are one of the same.
