FILM REVIEW: Student Films #1 - Bolton Film Festival

As part of this year's entirely online Bolton Film Festival, many films were sent in from student film-makers from all over the world. Here are just a few of those...

1. Under The Flag - USA - Dir: Jiawei Cheng

Set and filmed in a school in China, with Mandarin dialogue and English subtitles, this short film tells the story of a young dancer in a traditional dance troupe who is hoping to impress and gain a place at the coverted Academy. However, only one dancer from her school is normally chosen each year, and that honour is usually given to the girl who takes the lead in their showcase. It shows how this young girl's mother, knowing how much her daughter wants the role and the chance, bribes the teachers in order to make this happen. Her daughter though witnesses her mother and the teacher as the bribe takes place and so has a feeling of guilt and the film then explores how she reacts and confronts the situation.

Filmed with obvious love and knowledge of the subject and also with some very talented dancers; the lead role of YiYi in this film was played with realism by Michelle Jia Cheng. This film for me was better realised and with a more confident and proficient knowledge of cinematography than many professional films I have watched.  Extremely well done indeed.

2. Guy Proposes To His Girlfriend On A Mountain - Austria - Dir: Bernhard Wenger.

When the film's title tells you really all you need to know about the film, is there really much point in watching it? Not really, except the catch here, is that she rejects his proposal and the whole set up that he and his friends have done to try and make this a romantic and memorable event, becomes memorable for the wrong reason.

Filmed entirely on a mobile phone by one of the skiers, and spoken and acted in real time, this becomes much more like a spy-on-the-wall documentary than anything. Spoken in Austrian-German with subtitles, the film does exactly what it says on the can and there is simply nothing else to say about it.

Filmed by Christian Schaerf, the 'guy' is Lawrence Rupp and his girlfriend, Michaela Schausberger. Filmed with the co-operation of Interfilm Berlin, Lemonade Films and The Filmakademie, Wien.
