ONLINE MONOLOGUE REVIEW: Cactus - Tramp

A half-hour World Premiere monologue written by Philip Ridley and presented online via both the Tramp website (wearetramp.com) and their YouTube channel.

Performed by a very energetic and extremely watchable Kyle Rowe with innovative use of isolation / remote directing from Wiebke Green, we are taken on a surreal jouney in a strange near future where cacti and deset landscape have taken over a once lush deciduous forest area in this unnamed place - we assume England.

He is a dog-napper, but truly loves the animals and takes good care of those he does steal, but his favourite pastime seems to be shooting cacti. Cacti, he tells us is the third best thing for testing a pistol. The first two though (humans and pigs) he wouldn't entertain.

The story then takes a dynamic twist as we learn about his altercation, incarceration and escaping from a rival Kalashnikov-toting Russian mafia gang who take pleasure in torture, pain, and killing. Rowe's hyperventilating, neurotic, speedy and edge-of-your-seat delivery makes this story truly engaging. We are taken on this fantastical journey with him all the way, imagining the scenarios in our mind's eye as this cross between Inspector Cleaseau and Quentin Tarrantino makes good his escape from the clutches of the gang with the help of a fast-food deliveryman - and as they drive off into the sunset with plans of starting a new life together in a different country, and they reveal their sexual feelings for each other, there is still a lovely cliffhanger and question mark moment as the final reel comes to an abrupt end.

Humourful, off-beat, quirky, surreal, fun, and brilliant storytelling.
