FILM REVIEW: Culture Vulture #6 - Bolton Film Festival

2 further films from the section 'Culture Vulture' in thsi year's online Bolton Film Festival.

1. In Passing - UK - Dir: Anne Verheij - UK Premiere

Filmed in Tokyo with a central dancer (Miku Tsuchiya) with a voicover in both Japanese and Dutch (English subtitles), this artistic and visually interesting film shows this dancer through both her stillness and the wolrd rushing around her, and her movement when the world around her is still, trying to connect and navigate her way in a confusing and busy world.

I am not sure if the film succeeds in it's rather grandiose aim but it is an interesting and pleasing watch nonetheless.

2. They Saw The Sun First - USA - Dir: Stefan Hunt.

If someone had pitched this idea to me, I would have said they were mad and stupid and to go away; however, after watching this film I have been converted!

It is New York, present day. The elderly residents of the city are portrayed in this film through the movements, dance and physicality of the city's youth. The elderly speak their own voice-overs whilst the youths reenact these stories in a modern dance interpretative way. It works surprisingly well.

"Life can be wonderful growing old; don't be afraid of it."
