THEATRE REVIEW: Book Of Mormon - The Palace Theatre, Manchester.

The Palace Theatre Manchester are currently showing the phenomenon that is 'The Book Of Mormon'. Running from Fri 10 Dec 2021 until Sat 8 Oct 2022 in Manchester, Glasgow, Liverpool and Edinburgh this musical is one not to miss!

Written by Southpark's Trey Parker and Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez this hilariously funny musical is not for the faint hearted and definitely for the over 18s!

Focusing on two Mormon Missionaries from Utah, Salt Lake City. 'The Book Of Mormon' explores old school narratives in a completely bonkers and satirical way. Elder Price and Elder Cunningham are an unlikely pairing, that the audience grow to love and will never forget. The squeaky clean cut of Elder Price flatters the quirky chaotic boldness of Elder Cunningham which was portrayed brilliantly by Robert Colvin (Price) and Conner Peirson (Cunningham) both characters go on a journey of hope, awakening, and discovery, whilst completing their mission to baptise the people of Uganda into the Mormon faith.

As the curtain rose on stage, I sat back in my seat and was ready to enjoy my favourite musical yet again, this time it was a little more special as I’d brought my friend who had never seen this wickedly naughty show and I couldn’t wait to watch her reactions! Every single second was jam packed with dark humour, whitty banter and incredible choreography! As the show continued the punchy lines came thick and fast and the audience were in tears of laughter. The actors had the audience in the palm of their hands and I wouldn’t expecting anything less from this popular musical. 'The Book Of Mormon' is not for the easily offended with moments like the ‘Scary Hell Dream’ and ‘Turn It Off’ this much-loved musical explores issues like HIV/AIDS, female genital mutilation, homosexuality, poverty and cancer; in a whimsical way whilst still being quite sensitive to what they are exploring.

Robert Colvin was everything and more as the perfect Elder Price. Crisp, clean and effortlessly rigid Colvin played Price arduously.. His vocals were smooth, his dancing was on point and he has the cheekbones of a god. Alongside Elder Price, Elder Cunningham was played by the brilliant Conner Peirson. He perfectly played the quirky, emotionally defendant Cunningham. Each time the character opened his mouth the audience were in bits, his presence was warm and we instantly fell in love with his delightful character. Another mention goes to Will Hawksworth his portrayal of Elder Mckinley/Moroni was incredible, I absolutely adored his character and I felt he left a little sparkle everywhere he went! He was by far my favourite Mormon! Aviva Tulley played the gorgeous Nabulungi - she was just the right mixture of innocence and sass! I loved the character's naïvety and thought she played this well. Her voice was beautiful as well!

'The Book Of Mormon' was everything and more! The dancing was incredible, each actor was perfectly in time and synchronised. The singing was absolutely gorgeous and I fell I love every time a song began! The story is absolutely bonkers and I thought the creative direction throughout was phenomenal, I would watch this musical again and again until the end of time! Every person needs to see it at least once in their life.
