CHILDREN'S THEATRE REVIEW: Little Red Riding Hood - Waterside, Sale, Manchester.

Some theatre companies produce childrens theatre shows as a money-spinner; some make it their metier - and I am happy to report that Lyngo Theatre, the company behind 'Little Red Riding Hood' at The Chambers Theatre at Sale's Waterside is of the latter.

A company of 2 (and a wardrobe) take us through the story with accomplished beauty. It's a delightful story, full of magic and lovely effects, easy to follow and absolutely spot on for their catchment age of 3 - 7 year olds. This is a company that specialises in this style of show, and deliver!

The more scary and gruesome moments of the story (and let's face it there are a few!) were dealt with expertly, and the children in today's audience (a large group of primary school children as well as many others with their parents) were enthralled and delighted by it all. I have to admit that the front row did perhaps get the better show, as sightlines and audience inclusivity was something of an issue due to the venue and seating arrangement, but we all loved the effects, the magic, and the catchy songs. And using a puppet for Little Red Riding Hood half-way through also worked surprisingly well.

Sometimes the compnay went for full-on panto, eliciting responses from the audience; whilst other times it was almost cinematic in its storytelling. My only one criticism, and it isn't really that, is that I would have preferred a more upbeat way to end the show.

50 minutes of pure childhood joy, for all the tiny tots (and some not quite so tiny, or young tots too!). Bravo!
