Craig Ogden’s Guitar Weekend 2019
Featuring a rare opportunity for guitar enthusiasts to perform on stage

The Bridgewater Hall, Friday 25 – Sunday 27 January 2019

The Bridgewater Hall is delighted to welcome Craig Ogden’s hugely popular Guitar Weekend, which will be taking place at the Bridgewater Hall for the fifth time in January 2019.

This biennial festival celebrates the most popular of all musical instruments and features concerts, activities and workshops, plus the chance to participate alongside world-class professional and other guitar enthusiasts. Many of the events are free.

Highlights include:

Craig Ogden and Manchester Camerata
Craig launches the weekend and is joined by musicians from Manchester Camerata to play some of Craig’s favourite pieces in a variety of formats – solo, chamber ensemble and orchestral.

Zoran Dukić

During his early career, Zoran Dukić won nine first prizes in international competitions in just five years, sealing his reputation as one of the most remarkable musicians of his generation. This classical guitar recital features music by J.S. Bach, A José and Piazzolla, combining courtly dance with fiery tango.

Tom Doughty
Acoustic lap-slide guitarist and singer-songwriter Tom Doughty returns to perform two concerts in the informal setting of the Stalls Café Bar. Initially influenced by his father’s eclectic music collection, Tom’s music is instantly recognisable and he has a sound all of his own.

Additionally, in early 2019 The Bridgewater Hall and Tom will also launch a workshop and concert tour to each of the specialist spinal injury units in the UK, where Tom will be teaching recent patients how to play the lap slide guitar and develop their musicality.  The tour is primarily funded by The Bridgewater Hall with support from Creative United, Diamond Bottlenecks, John Hornby Skewes, Korg UK (Takamine guitars) and the Paraorchestra & Friends.

Craig’s Big Guitar Jamboree
Players of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in Craig’s Big Guitar Jamboree, a rare opportunity to perform on The Bridgewater Hall’s stage. The piece, composed by Callum Dewar, is suitable for guitarists at Grade 1 to Grade 8 level. The family friendly concert will be conducted by Craig, who will be joined by the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet.

Sean Shibe
Rising star Sean Shibe plays acoustic and electric guitars, contrasting 18th century Scottish lute music with contemporary works by Peter Maxwell Davies, James MacMillan and Steve Reich, ending with an arrangement of Julia Wolfe’s LAD, originally written for nine Highland bagpipes.
