PODCAST REVIEW: Poddled: A comedy podcast about the village of Poddleton.
So who are the Poddles of Poddleton? This is a brand new podcast on the scene from actor-writer-comedians Kris Hitchen and David Howell. And this is episode 1.
Poddleton is a ficticious village, but for those of you who live in or near Manchester, then it's location isn't too far removed from somewhere like, perhaps, Chorlton. Basically a suburb of the city. The two protagonists in the podcast are just blokes / mates who are chatting. Image Les Dawson doing his famous 'housewife gossiping over the garden fence' routine and you get the idea.
In the first epiosde they chat about The Arts. First of all they talk disparagingly about reviews and reviewers (a-hem!), saying that revieiwng is easy, you "just watch it and, like Catchphrase, you say what you see!" They the proceed to give their review of 'The Trouble With Maggie Cole'. - Listen to the podcast to find out what they had to say!
A new invention of a motorbike-cum-jetski then took their interest before reading "listeners letters", which surely with this being the first episode.. but of course, yes, it is all fake and a Mickey-take!
The pair then continue ripping each other to shreds verbally - something they seem to take great pleasure in doing throughout - by commenting on each other's advert for an organic honey company,
currently a stall at Poddleton Market!
The final part of this first episode is again an item which I believe they are going to keep in as a regular slot.. the 'Mystery Caller'. Again another fake joke call. This involved a long and ranting rage from the caller with so many expletives that Mary Whitehouse would have gone into convulsions! Up until this point there had not been any bad language at all, and so this ranting came out of the blue. I think in future, the pair need to keep their content consistent, and if they are prepared to accept such a tirade of continual swearing, a language warning needs to be added to the podcast advertsing.
This was their first episode together and so they are still experimenting and 'finding their feet'. There is certainly potential here for a fun and comedic half hour of utter nonsense, but the duo need to decide who they wish to market this podcast for, and how they wish to present themsleves first. This first episode gives out too many mixed messages, with no real firm idea of or connection with the fictional village of the podcast's title.
