ONLINE CONCERT REVIEW: STILGOE IN THE SHED - Joe Stilgoe.
Do you recognise the face and the name? Well I did, I had a flashback to about 30 years' ago. I thought, "hullo, I recognise that man... it's Richard Stilgoe!" - well upon further investigation I now know that it is Sir Richard's son, Joe. Golly, am I getting old?!
The internet and computers are certainly not something with which I am familiar or adept at in any way shape or form, and so it has taken me until now to realise that YouTube is more than just a pop music video channel. I guess you must be thinking that I have lived under a stone for the last 40 or so years, and to be honest, I probably have, and been the happier and more innocent for it.
However, if any of you are old enough to remember Richard Stilgoe, then this, Joe, his son, is his double! Each week he retires to his 'shed'. Or perhaps more politely, his office, where he has a piano, all his books and undoubtedly goes for some peace and quiet away from wife and children. Whilst the country has been in lockdown though, he has been filming his time in the shed for our viewing pleausre and entertainment. Seated at the piano, and allowing his wife to both video the concerts and interject with the occasional sarcasm, he plays, sings and chats. The anecdotes are easy and humorous, the music is my kind of music, and Stilgoe croons and bluffs his way through them with panache. He's not a 'singer' in the trained Pavarotti kind of way; but more of the Fred Astaire kind of crooner. But it is his personality and charm which engage, and, just like his father before him, knows his audience and knows how to entertain. This is old school, and it's brilliant!
I am not sure how many episodes he performs, or when they go 'live' etc.. I believe there are about 60 online so far. But if you find his YouTube page then for anyone over 50, it will be your weekly highlight. If you are under 50, then try something different... good jazz, blues, easy listening, swing, big band, folk, Musicals etc.. performed by a consumate entertainer that never once uses a swear word or does a filthy gesture just for a cheap laugh! Yes, real honest-to-goodness immaculate entertainment. Can you imagine that?!
