GASTRONOMY REVIEW: U Janusza: Kuchnia Polska Restaurant, Manchester.

A little bit off the beaten track in an urban area of Trafford, is a small, extremly clean, and very friendly and welcoming restaurant which serves traditional Polish cuisine. Run by a Polish family, with a predominantly Polish-speaking clientele, you know that you are getting the real deal! But do not despair if your Polish is a little rusty... they all speak English with English translations in the menu too!

The food was excellent both in quality and quantity. In fact, we had to ask for a "doggy bag" as the portions were more than generous. One of the staples of Polish cuisine are pierogi, and these come with different fillings. I had pork, and they were superb! My companion had a slow-cooked shoulder of pork which too, was cooked to perfection. To start the meal however, we opted for two very Polish soups, a chicken soup with noodles (doesn't sound very Polish, but it truly is!), and a white cabbage soup which includes pieces of Polish sausage and potatoes. These were served with French Fries and a cold vegetable seasonal salad (white cabbage, gherkin, carrot etc).

It is still Winter, and so the restaurant's menu reflects this. Maybe they have different menus depending on the season and produce available; I should hope so.

What is certain however is that the quality of the food (you can see them prepare it as the kitchen is open to view from the dining area) is both excellent and authentic. Moreover it is also excellent value for money (an important consideration in our unstable times).

Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area or a short detour if times permits.
