Coronation Street star Christine Mackie brings semi-autobiographical play to Waterside, Sale.
Established actress Christine Mackie, known to TV audiences for shows as diverse as Coronation Street, Banana and Downton Abbey, has set the childhood experience of losing her soldier father to suicide at the heart of her new play Best Girl, poignantly written for her daughter, actor Lois Mackie. She plays Annie, late 20s, smart, funny but held back by her inability to trust until love gives her the strength to seek the help she needs.
Speaking of the production, Christine said: “When I lost dad, I lost the belief in myself as a worth-while person, as someone you’d stick around for. His experiences in WWII lead to PTSD, which wasn’t talked about then. The children of veterans also suffer from the trauma of conflict. I was able to find help many years later which changed my life and the story of Best Girl is a remarkably hopeful and positive play.”
Lois Mackie added: “To be taking part in my first one-woman show is emotional and challenging in itself, but add to that the subject matter and family connection and we’ve got something really unique. I am very proud of what we have made and excited to share it with everyone.”
“A sharply written, moving, wise and witty play” April de Angelis, Olivier Award-nominated playwright
Best Girl will take place at Waterside in Sale, Trafford on Tue 21 Sep at 20:00.
