For a late lunch in the centre of Coventry, (lunches served between 12:00 and 4:45pm), this seemed like the ideal location. A large spacious dining area on the first floor of a modern shopping centre awaited. The decor was surprising; a strange cross between an elite Gentleman's Club and a restaurant owned by a wealthy eccentric. Oil paintings and drawings adorned the walls - including the odd stuffed animal's head on a plaque - whilst parquet flooring and mis-matched chairs seemed to be the order of the day for dining.
The lunch menu included brunch items, burgers, sandwiches, and some more substantial plates - one assumes, smaller versions of their evening fayre. From their main dishes on this menu I chose the 6oz flat-iron steak. The menu lists only two sauces, however, I asked for black peppercorn (not on the menu), and they obliged without hesitation. The steak is served with chips (nothing else, no vegetables or anything). Priced at £14.50 (the sauce, whichever you choose, is £1.95 extra), this is a little on the expensive side, when that is simply for the steak and nothing else.
The service was quick and efficient, although I fear I might have been there at a staff change-over, as I had three different waiters / waitresses ask me the same question within the space of a few minutes. The lighting is also a little on the dim side. (same old same old, with many a restaurant these days I fear), but if you go during the day, sitting by the window would be a good choice. Walking past a couple drinking expensive colourful cocktails, and the kitchen serving hatch, I found the toilet; which was, like the reastaurant itself, spotlessly clean; and the hot water tap effused boiling hot water. Jolly good.
It's certainly a quirky place, and is actually part of a chain of some 31 Cosy Club restaurants up and down the country.
