What a brilliant idea! Instead of opening an Advent Calendar each day, Oldham's Coliseum Theatre invite us to watch a short monologue each day, all written and performed by the best of local upcoming talent, and all under the direction of the Coliseum's Artistic Director, Chris Lawson.
The monologues are all between 2 and 6 minutes long and so far I have watched the first 7, so I have a little catching up still to do! However, there is humour aplenty in some, whilst others, like 'Light' by Hasfah Anneka Bashir were so touching and real I was crying throughout, as it touched a very personal nerve.
Starting with a short skit about a young woman alone on Christmas Day with her imaginary boyfriend, Tom Hardy, and ending (so far) with a sarcastic piece about Christmas Kitsch, we go through a whole gamut of styles and emotions - we even get performance poetry! - but my favourite so far is to be found behind door number 2: Mince Pie by Tom Kinney and performed by Jenny Platt.
The monologues are all free to watch and are available on both the Coliseum's website and their YouTube channel. If you can't go to the theatre, then let the theatre come to you, and watching one of these shorts each day will hopefully bring some Christmas theatre magic to your day!
