An online monologue produced, written and directed by Rohan Candappa, founder of The Lockdown Theatre Company. Along with my partner, we have watched most of the monologues in this series so far, and this one, Smoke, is an emotional and heartfelt plea for people to not take other people at face value.
Performed by Celeste De Veazey, she seems to be talking not to us, but to her ex-partner, they seem to have split up because he/ she had a very limited perception of De Veazey, defining her by her outward appearance, speech and actions. She declares that she is so much more than that; she is sometimes a solid, sometimes a liquid and soemtimes a gas, and no-one ought to be definied by the way they choose to present themselves, or the way others choose to see you. We should all, as far as possible, live in the here and now.
A key theme in quite a few of Candappa's scripts, and present in this one too, is running. Interesting how it crops up and how it is used.
Veazey's confessional style, iintimate with glass of alcohol in hand, seems very real and candid.
