ONLINE MONOLOGUE REVIEW: Bus - The Lockdown Theatre Company

In this online series of short monologues of new writing by Rohan Candappa, every piece has so far been performed by a different actor / actress. There must come a time when finding the right performer for a particular piece - particularly if it is an unpaid project - becomes almost nigh impossible. That's when Candappa himself has to step into the breach and read his own work to us.

In 'Bus', which is a long musing prompted by the sight of an empty bus passing with the driver wearing a face mask, Candappa poses several questions which make us think about who and how we are in this 'Lockdown World'.

It's an intelligent argument stating that we are all lost, we might be stuck at home in isolation, but we are lost nevertheless, living in a perpetual month of Sundays. Our new faith is the NHS, but this is a faith where the clergy die trying to save us, and the empty bus with a face-masked driver is a metaphor for where we are and our lives at the moment.

In time it will all end, and life will return to a comparative normal. Then we have to choose. We choose which bus to get on and where that bus should take us.

The monologue is dedicated to all the transport workers who have lost their lives through Covid-19.
