BOOK REVIEW: Dear Daddy by Eleni Charalambous

TITLE: Dear Daddy
AUTHOR: Eleni Charalambous
PUBLISHED BY: Independent publisher

This children’s book has an emotional letter contained in the story; it is a letter from a worried daughter to her father whilst he is in a coma; a letter read to him at a time when he needs encouragement as he’s unable to respond whilst unconscious; the letter encourages her dad to open his eyes and return back to her.

It is very engaging and told in rhyme making it easy to read to young children or for them to read themselves; although some of the rhymes are a little awkward in parts, the author succeeds in getting her message across to the reader in an emotive way.

It is a touching story which will evoke memories and difficult times for anyone who has lived the same experience, especially during current events with the COVID-19 situation.

Although it is quite short, the story packs an emotional punch and the dedication to the NHS is a fitting touch.

It is a useful resource for teaching children to be grateful for their family, to appreciate them and not to take good health for granted.

The illustrations are colourful and eye-catching and help to relay the message contained in the story.

The front and back covers are wipe-clean, ideal for parents reading the story to young children with sticky fingers.

This book is extra-special as it is based on a father-daughter relationship; it is a touching tribute to a father detailing a factual, emotional experience by his child.

The book is beautifully illustrated by Tanj Varcelija.
