The second in this series of short comedy duolugues lampooning a local council telephone helpline is called 'Tax', and once again sees Steve Connolly taking the role of your friendly operator, trying his best not to lose patience with his somewhat exaggeratedly simple and naive callers asking for help.
This episode's caller is played by local actress Megan Relph, who is calling to complain that she has been sent a court summons for non-payment of council tax, when in fact, she is exempt from paying it. The humour here centres around the fact that she is a law student, (as inded are her other three flatmates), but lacks the acumen to understand even the basics during her conversation with Connolly. Sadly this does not fizz, simply because Relph is standing next to a bookshelf full of educational books about theatre etc, with a large LAW book taking pride of place from the start. We therefore lose the punchline completely.
Directed by Natalie Kennedy, and written by Connolly, my comments from the first episode are just as relevant here. There is a lack of pace to the conversation - perhaps this is due to slow editing and constantly moving between the two images / locations. Why not use a split screen? And the continual use of "generic" or "name-of-local-council" words which slow the story down and make it unbelievable marr the sketches.
