MUSIC REVIEW: New single, 'Dive!' - 'The Vida Cult'

The Vida Cult is a band very much in the Indie genre. Based out of Hull, their line-up consists of Will Kirkby on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jordan Clark on lead guitar and synthesiser, Jack Walker on bass guitar and finally Ted Preston on drums. Formed only in September 2018, they are new onto the scene but have already attracted some decent reviews from the local press around Hull and more recently they have been gigging up and down the country.

“Dive!” is the latest release from the band, following up previous singles “Switch Sides” and “We Will Always Have Ray”. My personal favourite to date being “Switch Sides” which included a stunning acoustic version of the track. The outstanding question about The Vida Cult is whether they have so far come up with something as good as their debut single, and I’m not so sure.

The band has a strong influence from the likes of The Vaccines and Blossoms but you could be forgiven for thinking that “Dive!” is actually the latest release from The Strokes – the sound is so similar. You could argue that this is a compliment or a criticism but the point is that this single doesn’t have the originality of the last two releases and that is a little disappointing.

It is without question that the song will be great live and I hope to get a chance to see them live over the coming months, I can well imagine that “Dive!” may become a fan favourite but as a standalone release I am not sure it is the thing that will catapult The Vida Cult onwards and upwards – which incidentally is where I think they are headed.

These four guys are without doubt super talented and I think there is huge potential for them. I am not sure they’ve quite found their sound as yet – the thing that makes them original. You can hear more of this from their first two outings than in this release and there is definitely a huge amount to work with. Despite what I have said about “Dive!” I cannot wait for the band’s next release as I think it is only a matter of time before they fulfil their potential.
