Harriet Curry is a 21 year old singer/songwriter who is based in Manchester but was originally from Nigeria. She is very new to the music scene with “Girls” being her second release, following up from “Cuckoo” which came out in late 2018. Her debut single caused something of a stir in the Manchester area with Harriet being picked up by BBC Introducing, the broadcaster’s platform for unsigned and undiscovered talent.
“Girls” is the first opportunity to hear Curry as part of a studio team with Dami Sule, Manchester based hip hop artist and poet – an invite that Sule made to Curry after hearing her debut single. Based on Curry’s latest release “Girls”, this seems to be a collaboration that has taken Curry to the next level in her musical journey.
The lyrics to “Girls” are hard-hitting to say the least, Curry has opinions and she wants us to hear them through her music. The chorus alone tells a story with “Girls like me, we don’t get opportunities, so in our heads, instead of being young and free, Dictated by others who we’re gonna be, and in the end, thrown away like lost property.”. It feels like a much more grown-up track than her debut single.
Curry’s voice is incredible, there is a real soulfulness about it and coupled with her RnB style it makes for such a unique sound. There is also a hint of her African origins which only increases her originality is today’s musical arena. “Girls” feels very much like the start of Curry’s career and with BBC 1Xtra already playing this song she is already getting some nationwide exposure. I think we can expect big things from Harriet Curry in the very near future.
