Dare To Know Theatre, consisting of writer and performer, Jake Talbot and
Director and Producer, Miranda Parker are continuing their hard work
making work with and for their local community. Based in Oldham, the pair
are committed to supporting their local town, and their latest projects.
‘One For Sorrow, Two For Joy’ a community play, devised and performed by
members of the local community, echoes that feeling.
Following on from the success of their Oldham Coliseum Theatre MicroCommission, ‘A Broken Family, Together’, a verbatim piece of theatre that
followed the true experiences of healthcare professionals working at The
Royal Oldham Hospital, curated from a series of interviews with the staff
speaking about their lives during the pandemic, Dare To Know Theatre have
been hard at work with their local community to produce their first
community play.
The story follows Talia Khan, a young care leaver, dropped
into a new town with basically nothing but the clothes on her back. With a
longing to belong, Talia can’t quite seem to let go of her past. A story of
community and connection.
The show is performed by members of the local community, some of
whom have never been on stage before.
Liam Pennington, 41, who, in his
early years, was the lead singer in local band ‘The Tides’, said “I’ve never
been part of a theatre production, but it’s exciting, the group are great, and
I think we’ve created a real community feeling".
Richard Parker, 52, a social worker in the day, said “It’s my first time even
stepping on stage, I’m excited, nervous, but excited, It’s amazing what the
group have created, and shows the real hardships that people in our
community can face”.
Speaking to Sarah Prince, who also has never set foot on stage before, she said, “I’m thrilled and excited to be part of
something that very much feels like a community coming together in a fun
way.”
The play stars local actress, Sonya Nisa as Talia Khan, a challenging role,
but Sonya brings heart, connection and truth to the role. Dare To Know
Theatre have no doubts that this project can be a springboard for Sonya in
her acting career. #
'One For Sorrow, Two For Joy' is enjoying a two night run only, at The Grange
Theatre, Oldham, on the 23rd and 24th of July, tickets are £8 and it’s
certainly not a show to be missed.
For the first time ever, Dare To Know
Theatre are offering a 'Pay It Forward Scheme' - whereby you may purchase
a ticket for 'One For Sorrow, Two For Joy' for someone else, someone that
may not be able to afford to go to the theatre, marginalised groups who
have perhaps never felt invited into a theatre space, and young people
from care, who we feel may resonate and connect with the plays story.
