MUSIC REVIEW: Sleepwalking Animals. - Their first three singles.

Sleepwalking Animals is an interesting and altogether indie folk collective with potential, very much new on the scene, which need to stray away from the river of what has already been before them.

A seriously whimsical offering from this Manchester band, their name apt for what can be heard on YouTube and Spotify. Three singles (Dance Laura Dance, Wild Folk and Aengus’ Fool),. The band certainly shows great promise from the outfit; channelling indie folk energy for 'Dance Laura Dance', which is accompanied by a charming video featuring said dancer feeling the effects of what we’re hearing. 'And Wild Folk' is melodically notable, lyrically & tonally appealing from the vocals in particular. A more effective sound bringing out the animal element of the group name.

But while these sounds are indeed charming enough, I am left knowing that there are similar-sounding songs in existence like this already, where the influence is so similar. Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes immediately came into my head with the first two singles, and it gets somewhat difficult to shake that sound once it’s in there.

Sleep Walking Animals are a great band and I enjoyed listening to them. They provide their own original contribution but they’re not reinventing the wheel. That’s not to say they don’t have the capability to do so if they wish, it just feels as if they’re currently reflecting their influence rather than adding to it.
