ONLINE MONOLOGUE REVIEW: The Puzzle - Lockdown Theatre Company, London.
Yesterday I watched three short monologues back to back from the online theatre company headed by Rohan Candappa called Lockdown Theatre. The company has produced about 20 monologues during these last few months and have uploaded them all for free on their YouTube channel.
The first one I watched was called 'The Puzzle'. Written by Rohan Candappa and performed by Benji Dotan. It seemed like a fairly simple little piece, addressing the contemporary problem of lockdown... how we coped, what it was like, staying away, self-isolating, and our mental condition and coping strategies. Then it went on a little tangent about his sister buying him a charity shop jigsaw puzzle for his birthday and how he had given it a go, eventually completing it. The two thought processes tied in nicely at the end as the jigsaw was used as a metaphor not just for the lockdown period but for our lives in general. Our lives are a series of interconnecting pieces which only make sense when assembled in the right order.
Dotan gave a credible and realistic characterisation and is a sensitive actor.
