JAMES LAVELLE (UNKLE) AND LAYFULLSTOP HOST ARTIST DROP-IN FOR GREATER MANCHESTER MUSICIANS AND CREATIVES
Following the launch of MIF Sounds, Manchester International Festival (MIF) invite musician and record label owner James Lavelle of UNKLE and Manchester’s elite soul and jazz artist LayFullstop to host a music themed MIF Artist Drop-in.
Manchester International Festival (MIF) have been hosting regular artist drop-ins, to provide a space for creatives of all kinds to keep in touch, share experiences and share ideas. This Thursday, 17 August 2pm, to support the launch of MIF Sounds - a new initiative which will pledge £10,000 to support ten Greater Manchester music industry creatives and practitioners - James Lavelle of UNKLE and LayFullstop will host the event online alongside MIF Chief Executive and Artistic Director, John McGrath and Head of Music Jane Beese.
Previous MIF Artist Drop-in hosts have included Manchester-based creatives Darren Pritchard, Louise Wallwein, and Adam Szabo, as well as international artists Hélène Binet, Lola Arias and Huang Ruo.
For the past 30 years, James Lavelle has been at the forefront of global club culture. Known as much for his highly eclectic DJ sets as for his production work as UNKLE, Lavelle has been lauded as a highly influential tastemaker and musical curator. In 2014, Lavelle was asked to curate the iconic Meltdown at London’s Southbank Centre, joining a long list of musical luminaries such as David Bowie, Yoko Ono and Massive Attack.
LayFullstop is a soul and jazz artist from Manchester who has positioned herself to be one of the UK’s elite soul artists. Through a host of headline shows across the UK and Europe to support slots with artists such as Bilal and Akala, she has developed a distinctive and thoughtful live presence to compliment her sound and message – alongside an impressive and eclectic discography.
MIF Artist Drop-Ins are just one of the ways Manchester International Festival has been helping local artists whose livelihoods have been seriously affected by the COVID-19 crisis. 35 artists and performers from across Greater Manchester have been supported to develop work during the lockdown – from online Remote Residencies to workshops and exhibitions. Applications are now also open for the next series of Festival in My House… And Yours – an opportunity for six Manchester-based artists to develop events online. MIF has also continued to actively support and be part of GM Artist Hub, offering advice and resources to the independent practitioners, artists, and companies of Greater Manchester.
