NEWS: Manchester's 53Two Theatre starts a new charitable initiative to aid and support new and emerging local struggling artistes.

53two launch charitable initiative to support new, emerging and underserved artists at their arches home.

53New is being launched to provide a little break for those that would, usually, struggle to mount a project, rehearse a show or present their work. Under the charity banner, 53two will offer new companies or individuals discounted and deferred-payment room hire at their fully accessible studio and/or theatre.

For those that have tried, you’ll know all too well how difficult mounting a production is, how much the initial costs are before you can even hope to make any return on ticket sales. As cuts increase, the arts world gets more difficult to enter and people’s budgets tighten, 53two hope to be able to give some new creatives the platform to shine.

‘Now more than ever are the arts needed and support for it has to double-down. Manchester is, as we know, brimming with creative talent. For many however, the chance to find an output for this is increasingly difficult. With this new initiative, it is our hope that we can provide just a few individuals or companies a little leg-up into this difficult industry and allow them a voice.’

Simon Naylor, Creative Director, 53two

53New will see a 15% reduction on hire rates for those companies less than 18 months old or with less than 5 professional productions/performances to their name. It will also allow production companies and/or individuals to produce their event and pay after it has finished, cutting out any initial spending on venue hire which is often the biggest sticking point. The team will still be ensuring quality work is produced and every submission will be curated to ensure a parity of standard, as well as insisting that the Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity policy is adhered to. However, it is hoped that with just this small change, doors will open for those who have previously struggled to find an opening. As is the norm, any profit made by 53two will be used to continue to serve disadvantaged and underserved artists.

Creatives looking to use 53New as a platform should head to www.53two.com/53new and complete the short application form. All applicants who fall within the criteria of what 53two consider to be new will be considered.
