THEATRE REVIEW: River by Philip Ridley. - online live streaming.

The shortest monologue of 'The Beast Will Rise' series to date, and also the only one so far to have an exterior scene. Written by Philip Ridley, and directed by Wiebke Green, this series is a set of online world premieres in conjuction with The Southwark Playhouse, in place of the Ridley play which should have been taking place within the theatre.

Lasting just over 2 minutes we see a house door, and the front doorstep leading out onto a slanting street. Did I also detect the noise of running water? Suddenly a lady (Lucy Gape) opens her door in a flurry. She is scared, afraid perhaps, but of what we don't know. We do know she is nervous and as she shouts across the devide: the 'river' of a street that is between her and us, she screams that we should wave our handkerchiefs, and she will wave her hat. "One day we will cross the river." At that she nervously looks around again and scurries back inside.

In the current climate, only one possible metaphor can be drawn from this short outburst, and it is clearly, precisely and deliberately delivered. We are living in very scary times!
