From a new production of a cult modern musical to a star-studded revival of a Broadway classic, there’s plenty coming up at the award-winning Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester in the coming months.
Jerry Springer the Opera caused a storm when it came to the UK stage in 2005. In this new revival it promises to be a raucous and fresh production for 2019.
Not for the faint-hearted or easily offended, expect chaos and debauchery in this smash hit musical based on the infamous talk show – The Jerry Springer Show.
From a stripper who just wants to dance and the ultimate battle of good vs. evil between god and the devil, nothing is off limits in this must-see production. Play With Fire, the production company behind Orphans and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, returns with Some Voices, written by Joe Penhall, the genius mind behind the hit Netflix series Mindhunter.
Ray, a young man with schizophrenia, is trying to reassimilate after a stint in a psychiatric hospital. He is sent to live with his overworked brother, Pete, where he is torn between getting his life back on track and his exciting infatuation with a troubled young woman named Laura. A play about our minds, medications and those we surround ourselves with. Some voices will get inside your head, make you laugh and make you question who, if anyone, in this world can really be labelled ‘sane’.

Can two men raised to fight ever learn to love? That’s the question behind the critically-acclaimed play Gypsy Queen that returns to Manchester. It’s the story of ‘Gorgeous’ George O’Connell, a bare-knuckle fighter and traveller, who enters the world of professional boxing which puts him on a collision course with his roots, his identity and his greatest fear.
In the opposite corner, gay boxer Dane ‘The Pain’ Samson, the young pretender and son of a boxing legend, is fighting his own battles that lead to a tragedy that neither could predict. Gypsy Queen is an unconventional love story between two fighters who discover the greatest challenge lies outside the ring.

Mame sees two-time Olivier Award-winner Tracie Bennett star as Mame Dennis, one of musical theatre’s all-time greatest heroines, in this brassy, hilarious and touching adaptation of Patrick Dennis’s bestseller, Auntie Mame. Bennett (She Loves Me, High Society, End of the Rainbow, Hairspray, Blood Brothers, Coronation, Scott & Bailey) is joined by film, TV and theatre favourite Harriet Thorpe as Vera (Absolutely Fabulous, The Brittas Empire, new BBC comedy Mister Winner, Wicked, MAMMA MIA!, National Theatre and West End). Jerry Herman’s celebrated score includes the rousing title number, plus “Open a New Window,” “If He Walked into My Life,” “We Need a Little Christmas,” “Bosom Buddies” and “That’s How Young I Feel.”
