GASTRONOMY REVIEW: The Deacon - Lytham.

Having previously enjoyed a meal earlier this year at this establishment - The Deacon in Lytham - we returned for our pre-theatre dining this evening.

Sadly the menu had changed. That was our first disappointment. This only got worse. We had chosen a starter and main each, and when the waitress came to take our order, we were told that two of the items we had chosen were no longer in stock. They had had a large party in earlier and taken all ten of their supply. I chose again, only to find that that choice too was out-of-stock, and so begrudgingly ended up with a pate starter. Not what I wanted, but simply the only thing left that I could eat! Advertised as a course pate, the one served to me was extremely smooth. Another cross, not a tick.

There is a fashion at the moment for liberally applying crystalised sea salt onto almost everything, and this establishment was no exception. The food was uber-salty.

The main course which I had ordered was a seared scallop risotto (they had this in stock!), however, having a tomato allergy I had read the list of ingredients supplied on the menu, and there was no mention of tomatoes. However, when it came, the dish was awash with them! I needed to re-order yet again! A very poor second - or was this third - choice was the beef cheek and ale pie. This was tasteless and very wet. Admittedly there were not any tomatoes inside the pie, but the filling was puffed up with carrots and onions as well as a LOT of watery gravy. The accompanying vegetables were extremely al-dente (again another fad which will hopefully die very soon!) and smothered in butter.

My companion's main course was pork belly, which, according to the menu was served with a Japanese lacquer (although I think they probably meant liqueur (?)) with absolutely no mention of a BBQ sauce, in which the pork bely rested.

Needles to say we shall not be visiting The Deacon again.. especially when they had the nerve to add a service charge to the bill!
