GASTRONOMY REVIEW: The Deacon - Lytham (Fylde Coast).

Occupying the old William And Deacon Bank building in the centre of Lytham town centre is a pub eatery to rival any such establishment. Lytham town centre was, to my almost certain recollection, the cleanest British town centre I have had the pleasure to walk through in a very long time (credit indeed to both the Town Council and the residents here!), and the cleanliness and superb atmosphere did not stop outside. Once inside The Deacon everything was spotless (including the gents' toilets which are notorious for being a little 'wiffy' at best! Not here!).

Seated at a window looking out over the square, we perused the menu and were verily impressed. A large and varied selection from standard 'pub fayre' to more exotic and adventurous choices. For our starters we chose a salmon fishcake for my companion and confit duck spring roll with chicken liver pate for myself. Both starters were ample portions and eye-catchingly served. Moreover, extremely tasty. Our main courses were no less appetising either as we ploughed our way through beef cheek and ale pie, and honey roast chicken.

The food really was first class, piping hot, generously portioned, nicely presented, etc. and it would be a little churlish perhaps to complain, so I shall refrain. Instead I proffer a couple of suggestions. The amount of crystallised rock salt used on the chips and vegetables was excessive. It would have been more preferable to have left the salt off and allowed the customer to season themselves from the table salt as required. The vegetables served in the main dishes were a combination of excellently cooked (asparagus and carrots) and extremely al dente and basically raw (Mangetouts, green beans). The tomato was not a beef tomato (as advertised on the menu) but instead two salad tomatoes. However, these are very minor points in the scheme of things. The service was excellent, the prices on a par with those of Lytham generally, and the quality of the food absolutely way above par.

It was an excellent chance visit, and I am already looking forward to having the opportunity of sampling more of their menu on my next visit!
