This early evening a group of talented vocal students from the RNCM gave a short concert with piano accompaniment from the repertoire of one of the most influential names in Musical Theatre, Stephen Sondheim.
Without a programme I am truly struggling, since this concert is not even listed in the RNCM's archive of online programmes either, and so I probably don't even have the title correct, apologies. However, all I can say is that whoever was responsible for the directing of this concert, then full marks. This is how you do a concert! From the smart and professional entrance to the bows, it was just as it should be, and practically perfect.
Several medlies were sung by these 13 skilled vocalists this evening, starting with a selection from 'Sweeney Todd', moving to 'Company' then 'Into The Woods'. These were then followed by three solo songs, 'Not A Day Goes By' (Merrily We Roll Along), 'Send In The Clowns' (A Little Night Music), and 'I Remember' (Evening Primrose), before the final medley which showcased Sondheim's genius as a lyricst in his early collaboration with Leonard Bernstein's, 'West Side Story'.
The cummulate ensemble sound was lovely, and all the solos were highly enjoyable; although my personal favourites were - in no particular order - a) the young tenor who started the show singing Sweeney Todd, b) the studied wholistic performance of 'Send In The Clowns', and c) the plaintive rendition of 'I Remember'.
My only negative criticism is that the concert was too short... I didn't want it to end.
