This evening’s performance of Club Tropicana at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, was a fusion of sun, '80s jam, big hair and epic fancy dress. As was predicted, the show was stolen brilliantly by the iconic Joe McElderry flaunting his utterly infectious buzz and energy. The story follows a groom, left at the alter, and his heartbroken and confused bride to their honeymoon resort during a surprise inspection for “hotel of the year award”. The show recognised the notoriously feel good and optimistic years of the '80s, demonstrating the unwavering belief of that generation that your destiny is in your hands.
The storyline was slightly lacking narrative and intrigue. However, this was perhaps the desired effect as the focus was brought to the performances and music rather than getting lost in a complex and gripping love story. The subplot of the production consisted of a blossoming romance between Hotel owners Robert and Serena, played by Neil McDermott and Amelie Berrabah which, I have to admit, was adorable and romantic.
The soundtrack consisted of a prime selection of '80s classics including “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and “Physical”. The choices were effective in aiding the narrative and had every member of the audience clapping and dancing along. This was aided by McElderry’s flair to guide an audience leaving us in the palm of his hand. He even managed to get us up doing a short dance routine. This lightened the mood and was a choice ice-breaker. It should be said that a few of the singers were incredibly loud and even screeching which was uncomfortable. Saying this, it was unclear whether this was due to faulty mics but it certainly did not ruin the performance.
The costumes, designed by Diego Pitrach, were quintessential '80s fashion including crimped hair and spandex. A particular favourite had to be the pink and green suit exhibited by character, Gary, hotel manager of Club Tropicana. The suit was flamingo pink with matching patent brogues: so cute and perfect for the camp and hilarious character. Other costumes displayed were, of course, Hawaiian style floral shirts and ‘tight & bright’ speedos!
The dancing by the ensemble was absolutely flawless. Their synchronisation was impeccable and the choreography, by Nick Winston, was apt and exciting. Each dancer was ridiculously talented and not one of them was letting down the group. I found myself looking forward to the dance numbers as they were so energetic and compelling. It was clear just how much rehearsal time had gone into polishing every routine.
Although the script was hilarious, there were a few excessively repeated jokes which became cringey at times. Despite this, a lot of the jokes had much of the audience in stiches leading to a complete audience standing ovation. Overall, the performance was a great success and a fabulous evening. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was totally perfect timing bringing the July heatwave to the South!
