For any Beatles fans visiting Liverpool, this is the perfect bus tour which starts from The Albert Dock and visits the four Beatles homes plus all the places named in their hit songs such as ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane.’
Boarding the bus, The Beatles ‘Magic
Mystery Tour’ song welcomed everyone on board; they were mostly visitors to the
city and our tour guide, Tony Cook introduced us to our driver, Neil and explained
what the tour would entail.
The tour makes photo opportunity stops at Penny Lane,
Strawberry Fields, Paul McCartney’s home at 20, Forthlin Road, John Lennon’ s
home at Mendips, Menlove Avenue and a short stop at the former home of Beatle,
George Harrison, at 12, Arnold Grove,
Wavertree before culminating at the famous Cavern Club in Mathew Street. It
also drives past the home of Beatle, Ringo Starr at 10, Admiral Grove and the Empress
Pub where his mother worked, which has a plaque commemorating his first solo
album, ‘Sentimental Journey’; the pub has a giant colourful mural tribute to Ringo,
the famous Toxteth Beatle. We also drove past the school Ringo attended,
St. Silas CP, and where Liverpool pop singer, Billy Fury attended.
The tour takes in all the famous
landmarks and sites of Liverpool including Sefton Park, Dovedale Towers where The
Quarrymen played, the Sergeant Pepper Bistro bus shelter, Brian Epstein’s home
at 197, Queens Drive, the two Liverpool Cathedrals, Hope Street, the street which won UK’s ‘Greatest Street
Award’ for cultural diversity and the Grade 1 listed buildings in the city centre plus the Empire Theatre
where The Beatles played on 5th December 1965, the last show the Fab
Four played in their home town.
This tour provides a wealth of information
about Liverpool, it’s cultural and musical heritage and its importance for
music lovers; tour guide, Tony has a remarkable amount of Beatles/Liverpool knowledge
which he imparts in a friendly and endearing way portraying his love of his home town and his pride of its
famous sons, such as The Beatles, The Quarrymen, Billy Fury, Gerry Marsden et
al. Tony is an ex member of The Mersey Beatles and spent many years touring
with the band. Additionally he was born and actually lived in Forthlin Road where
Paul McCartney was brought up.
There’s a playlist of Beatles
songs en route for everyone to join in with and Tony informed the group that the
tour bus was filmed whilst unveiling Paul
McCartney’s new single, ‘ The Days We Left Behind’ by BBC Radio Merseyside a
few days previously.
The tour takes approximately two hours and includes free
entry to The Cavern Club and a 15% discount ticket for The Cavern Restaurant in
Mathew Street.
This is a fun and informative way to learn about The Beatles
and Liverpool heritage and its musical culture, make sure to get your ‘Ticket
To Ride’, you won’t be disappointed.
