THEATRE REVIEW: Cirque Du Soleil: Ovo - Sud De France Arena, Montpellier. France.
Ovo is an egg, and all the creatures, mainly insects, that inhabit the world beneath or feet come together to look, to celebrate, to wonder, to marvel at, or otherwise mock or play with, the egg.
As is usual with any Cirque Du Soleil show there are fantastic costumes, live music, excellent lighting effetcs, and extremely high production values all round. And that's before we even start to look at the performers themselves. This show, filmed live at The Sud De France Arena in Montpellier, France, was absolutely no execption.
The idea behind the show, the moral or narrative drive if you will, is that an egg is a symbol of life, and that we should take more care and learn more about the tiny creatures that inhabit our world, for they are an integral part of the world's eco-system and deserve respect and recognition. A nice theme in our troubled times.
As always, the trapeze, aerial, balancing, tumbling, and goodness knows what else was first class. I especially liked the precision choreography of the kiwi fruit balancing towards the start of the show.
But sadly there was one thing which let this particular show down for me, and that was the comedy routines. As with all circuses, it is tradition to 'bring on the clowns', and contemporary circus still continue that tradition even if the clowns are not recognisable as such these days. However in this show it was a couple of bugs who were slapstick and knockabouts, and sadly, their humour fell very flat on both the French audience live and myself at home.
Another problem which marred my viewing pleasure was nothing to do with the show, but the recording of it. The capturing of this show was very poor and sadly quite amateurish. It was even out of focus a few times. It was s seemingly static mounted at the rear of the arena, and so there was no real atmosphere, no close-ups and the sound quality was awful.
