GASTRONOMY REVIEW: Lameizi Chinese Restaurant, Manchester.
Needing a pre-theatre meal this evening, my companion and I decided to try a restaurant that had been on my radar for a while, but neither of us had ever been to before. And with the restaurant in question - Lamezei Chinese Restaurant on Chester Street being only a cockstride away from both The Dancehouse Theatre and our destination the Palace Theatre, it seemed an ideal choice.
Greeted by a friendly waitress, the staff were attentive, polite, helpful, and basically just perfect. They knew exactly what to do and when, visible when needed and invisible when not. Wanting to try the restaurant out as much as possible we decided to opt for what they called Set Meal A. For £22,00, this gave one the choice of two different soups (Peking Hot And Sour or Chicken And Sweet Corn); a second plate of Aromatic Crispy Duck - served the tradition way with pancakes, hoi-sin sauce, cucumber and spring onion; and a choice of two main course dishes: Beef in black pepper sauce and Chicken with cashew nuts. Both dishes were served with stir-fried brocolli with garlic and Yung Chow fried rice.
The meal came swiftly, even asking if we'd like to take a little break between courses, piping hot, professionally served, and each course was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious.
For our drinks my companion had rose tea (prettily served in a wine glass with the pink roses floating on top), whilst I opted for a pot of jasmine tea. The glass and pot refills were unasked for and a most pleasant and welcome part of the experience.
Their menu is extensive, and more importantly, during our visit, the only other diners were orientals, which is a sure-fire sign that the food is both good and authentic. Moreover, despite our hunger we were unable to finish the mains after such large portions of soup and duck, and so the staff were more than happy for us to bring home 'doggy bags', as their portions were indeed healthy.
Based on our experience this evening, I can say that it will not be long before we return to sample other delights on offer.... Highly recommended.
