NEWS: Bolton's Octagon Theatre announces its new and exciting season, and our reviewer went to find out what the buzz was all about!

Bolton Octagon has been delivering theatre in Bolton for the last 50 years, and have debuted some of the most well known theatre productions we now have as a staple of theatrical education in the UK.

This season is extremely exciting with shows such as Treasure Island, a Christmas production for all the family which has never been done at the theatre - not panto but a musical, which seems to be a major theme for the season.

It's very exciting to see the championing of female writers and roles for women that break stereotypes and boundaries in theatre which is much of what we need. Female characters who know what they want, know how to bend the rules without breaking them, and strong independent women with the strength to take on men at their own game when it was completely looked down on. Stories of women that need to be told.

What I am very interested in is the local engagement. I will be watching closely with anticipation to see how this is rolled out, and with them now doing general auditions for local actors too, it will be interesting to see local talent on the stage for future productions. As well as bringing more northern actors into their productions, it will be great to see them champion more unknown talent which was talked about, bringing opportunities for all.

In what will be teh first season under the Octagon's new Artistic Director, Lotte Wakeham, their season will start with the evergreen comedy, Oscar Wilde's, 'The Importance Of Being Earnest'. This well-loved work will abondon it's traditional seting and be brought into the 21st century with a new take on the piece!

The season looks very promising, they certainly have a lot of work ahead of them which I cant wait to see.
