THEATRE REVIEW: A Pissedmas Carol - Leicester Square Theatre, London

'A Pissedmas Carol' presented by the uproarious Shitfaced Showtime company at Leicester Square Theatre on Thursday, November 30th, delivered a side-splitting and unique twist to the classic tale of redemption. This unorthodox production had the audience roaring with laughter from start to finish, proving that a very tipsy Scrooge can bring joy and merriment to the holiday season.

The ensemble cast of five talented actors demonstrated exceptional skill in seamlessly blending the timeless narrative of A Christmas Carol with the unpredictable antics of a very inebriated Scrooge. The chemistry among the performers was palpable, creating a dynamic and unpredictable energy that kept the audience engaged and entertained.

The star of the show, the inebriated Scrooge, played by John Mitton deserves special mention for his fearless and utterly hilarious portrayal. Navigating the complexities of Dickens's character while under the influence added an unexpected layer of humour to the performance. Their ability to adapt to the unpredictable nature of the performance, particularly the spirits, demonstrated ingenious skill as improvisors. Each actor embraced the chaos, turning potential mishaps into memorable comedic moments that had the audience in stitches. Adding to the festive atmosphere was the brilliant pianist, Charlotte Brooke, whose improvised and modernised Christmas classics, such as 'Stay Now', and a fresh take on 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day', added a contemporary flair to the timeless tunes. The highlight of the musical interlude was undoubtedly the hilarious rendition of 'Baby, It's Cold Outside', with Mr and Mrs Cratchit getting saucy with one another whilst Tiny Tim, limped off for firewood!

Guiding the show with wit and finesse was the compère, (James Murfitt) who skilfully steered Scrooge back to the script during his more ad-lib moments. The compère's quick thinking and seamless interventions kept the performance on track, adding an extra layer of hilarity as they navigated the unpredictable landscape of an inebriated Scrooge. Additionally, the compère led audience participation with infectious enthusiasm, turning the theatre into a lively and interactive space. ‘Oh yes it did!’

What makes 'A Pissedmas Carol' truly unique is the unpredictable element injected into each performance. With a different actor getting drunk for every show, the audience is in for a fresh and unpredictable experience each night. This innovative approach adds an extra layer of excitement, ensuring that no two performances are alike and leaving spectators eagerly anticipating the unique antics of the show and seeing who will be inebriated! The company of nine actors are all excellent and interchange between the roles on different evenings so bring ever-changing dynamics of each performance create a delightful sense of unpredictability.
