MANCHESTER ALT CABARET NIGHT CELEBRATES 13 YEARS OF TALENT

Next date: Friday 28 JUNE 2019

Prestwich’s alternative cabaret night Shangri La! is celebrating its thirteenth anniversary this month with another smorgasbord of artistic talent.

The monthly not-for-profit night, which takes place at the Carlton Club in Prestwich, features an eclectic mix of music, short theatre, film, acoustic acts, stand-up, spoken word, dance and live bands.

Co-host Jo Haydock said: "13 years on and still going strong! People keep coming back for lots of reasons. Yes, we have a cheap bar and a really friendly audience, but it's mainly because of the amazingly talented performers we now have queuing up to play. It's also all about the diversity - we have everything from gospel to burlesque, beatbox to electro folk, car sponge puppets to punk. People never quite know what they're getting and that's the whole point.

"I think people also like the fact we don't actually make any money - just helping to put Prestwich on the map by supporting culture and community. We've seen our neighbourhood morph into a vibing place to be over the past couple of years with artisan markets, a literary festival, community co-operative, Arts festival and cinema club - and it's great to be a part of that."

This month’s eclectic-as-ever line-up features:

Icarus Williams
Folk musician, stand up comedian, player of such classic venues as Hebden Trades Club and the Surf Cafe and 300 mile marcher of the people's march for the NHS, Icarus has shared the bill with acts as diverse as Billy Bragg, Attila the Stockbroker and Werbeniuk. The guttural pleasantly unpleasant voice and variety of guitar styles are as much a part of his music as ever.
Accord Gospel Choir
The Accord Gospel Choir's repertoire is as diverse as its members, ranging from traditional Gospel spiritual to contemporary pop. From humble beginnings performing at weddings and christenings, the Choir has grown to deliver high profile performances at the Bridgewater Hall and Royal Northern College Of Music.

Mrs No Overall
A true scrubber in rubber, and Burlesque Idol finalist, Mrs No Overall is a downtrodden cleaning lady who breaks out from domestic drudgery in glorious celebration of middle-aged exuberance. Her alto ego Kath Morgan-Thompson is many things. Yoga teacher, Bollywood, Kathak and Northern Soul dancer, award-winning performance artist... and a kick-ass comedian.

Old School Idles
Old School was formed back in 1977 by three Preston school mates and after a brief 25 year 'sabbatical', they're back and better than ever with a new name! Three guitarists with 18 strings between them and sometimes it really sounds like they are playing them all at once.

Friday 28 June, Carlton Club, Bury Old Road, £5 on the door, doors open 8pm, first act on stage 9pm ish.
