BOOK REVIEW: When You Were Born

TITLE: When You Were Born
AUTHOR: Benji Bennett
PUBLISHED BY: Adam's Cloud

This delightful book tells the story every child is interested in, the story of how they were born. It portrays how a baby chooses his/her parents, which is a novel premise.

The short simplistic story entertains the idea that a baby waits in heaven to be born and then selects his/her own parents on the day they are born. It is a sweet idea and one which will please the young children it is aimed for.

This award-winning book is quite breathtaking and it earned author, Bennett the Board Gais Energy Irish Book Award in 2013; it was the 5th year in a row that Bennett was nominated.

Beautiful illustrations of the happy animal families accompany the story and a simple account of how children can choose anyone to be their mum or dad but they chose the parent reading the book is a charming, unusual way to explain to youngsters about their birth. Reading it will help create the emotional, magical bond between children and their parents from an early age.

This bestselling and award-winning book honestly took my breath away and it is the perfect gift for a baby shower, a christening or a birthday; it is also fitting for adoptive parents to read to their children.  It is a perfect memento to accompany a child’s birth.

Wipe clean front and back covers and pages are a bonus for parents reading the story book to children with sticky fingers.

This book by Bennett, who has now written nine books, was devised because he wants every child in the world to be told they are loved each night before they go to sleep. It was inspired by a little chat one night when his son, Robbie asked him, “Dad, why do you love me so much?”

The book is published by Adam’s Cloud, an organisation created by author Bennett after he lost his son, Adam, when Adam was just four years old.

Beautiful colourful illustrations by Roxanne Burchartz feature throughout and a dedication to Adam is on the inside cover of this book preceding the story.

A percentage of proceeds from the sale of author, Bennett’s books go to LauraLynn charity, Ireland’s children’s hospice.
