NEWS: Poole's Lighthouse reveals full October programme.

EVENT LISTINGS: OCTOBER 2020 

Please find below details of October 2020’s shows and events at Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts. In line with the Government’s latest safety advice all performances are for socially distanced audiences. 

David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet Friday 2 October, Cinema2pm In his 93 years, David Attenborough has visited every continent on the globe, exploring the wild places of our planet and documenting the living world in all its variety and wonder. In this unique documentary feature he reflects upon the defining moments of his lifetime as a naturalist and the devastating changes he has seen. 

Magellan – Circumnavigation  Friday 2 October, Cinema, 2pm Bob Whitley (guitar, mandolas) and Lee MacKenzie (cello) perform this musical story about a love divided by the greatest voyage of discovery mankind has ever made – the first circumnavigation of the Earth in 1519 when sailors’ greatest fear was fallinoff the edge of the world. 

Lighthouse: OUTSIDE – Cloudscapes Saturday 3 OctoberAmpitheatre11am, 11.45am, 12.30pm, 1.45pm, 2.30pm, 3.15pm Part of the very first season of Lighthouse: OUTSIDE – outdoors in the amphitheatre to the side of the building – Lighthouse Associate Artist Laura Rees of Gobbledegook Theatre stages her duologue for performer and clouds as audiences lie on beanbags and contemplate the ever-changing parade of clouds while listening to a story laced with clouds. 

Lighthouse: OUTSIDE – Olly Olsson Saturday 3 October, Ampitheatre, 7pm  Having performed his first sell-out show at Lighthouse last April, the local singer songwriter returns as part of Lighthouse: OUTSIDE to play old favourites and new material to a loyal audience that is hungry to see him play here again. 

BSO: Voices from the East Wednesday 7 OctoberConcert Hall, 7.30pm  Chief Conductor Kirill Karabits leads a tour of Armenia and Ukraine from the rostrum as the BSO perform little-known Theodore Akimenko’s luscious tone poem ‘Angel Poem Nocturne’, Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Little Russian’ Second Symphony. * All BSO concerts this autumn will be available to watch from home, as digital livestream concerts direct from Lighthouse. 

Live and Unheard: Dave Griffiths & Band + Asha Zee + Harper & Edwards
Thursday 8 October, Theatre, 7.30pm Our monthly unsigned music night returns in the company of Dave Griffiths & Band, currently working on their third album of material, the promising 14-year-old Dorset singer songwriter Asha Zee and folk-rock duo Harper & Edwards. 

Derek Nash Acoustic Quintet Friday 9 OctoberTheatre8pm Our Studio Jazz season is a little different this autumn – for a start it’s not in the Studio. What isnt changing though is the quality of the music and we open with Derek Nash who’s arguably best known as a soloist and lead alto player in Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. 

Lighthouse: OUTSIDE – Gnora the Gnome’s Daytime Disco Saturday 10 October, Ampitheatre, 1pm Gnora the gnome, with her brothers Gnorman and Gneville, have all been stuck underground for months. Now that they can get back outdoors, they’re going to have a disco to celebrate – and we’re all invited to join them for a boogie 

Lighthouse: OUTSIDE – Romeo & Juliet Saturday 10 October, Ampitheatre, 4pm The HandleBards characteristically unhingedbonkers, laugh-out-loud funny version of Romeo & Juliet with music, mayhem and more costume changes than you can shake a spear at. Forget the tears and tragedy, pack a picnic and get ready for some socially distanced, live and wired Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before. 

Coastal ComedyAndy Askins + Martin Wratten + Gareth Richards Saturday 10 October, Theatre, 8pm The return of our monthly stand-up comedy club finds ace local comic Gareth Richards, who co-hosted Frank Skinner’s Sony Award-winning Absolute radio show for years, opening for TV headliner Andy Askins and rising star Martin Wratten. Regular compere Adrienne Coles keeps things moving. 

BSO: Eight Plus Eight Wednesday 14 October, Concert Hall, 7.30pm  James Feddeck conducts as the BSO present a programme of beguiling, atmospheric works opening with Schubert’s Eighth Symphony – his best-known, but most mysterious work – paving the way for Dvořák’s unashamedly buoyant and uplifting Eighth Symphony. * All BSO concerts this autumn will be available to watch from home, as digital livestream concerts direct from Lighthouse. 

BSO: Viennese Masters Wednesday 21 October, Concert Hall, 7.30pm  Haydn’s dramatic Symphony No 95 and Brahms’ monumental Second Symphony are conducted by Kees Bakels with guest soloist Richard Hough on piano. * All BSO concerts this autumn will be available to watch from home, as digital livestream concerts direct from Lighthouse. 

Iain Stirling: Falling Upwards Wednesday 21 October, Theatre, 8pm  The star of hit comedy TV gameshow Iain Stirling’s Celebability explores his inability to function in the most basic of public settings, social media’s constant pressure to live your best life and that one time a man stole his shoes in a new show. 
The National Trust Fan Club Thursday 22 January, Theatre 7.30pm Join Helen Wood’s one-woman quest to visit every National Trust property and become the NT’s biggest super-fan – it's packed with Goretex, cream teasa loyal canine assistant and lots of laughter. 
Art Themen/Laura Jurd Quintet Friday 23 October, Theatre, 8pm When one of the major figures in British modern jazz is united with one of the key figures in the younger generation in front of a dream of a swinging rhythm section the magic is all but guaranteed. 

Jessica Fostekew: Hench Saturday 24 OctoberTheatre 8pm Absolute powershed and regular host of The Guilty Feminist podcast Jessica – who grew up in Swanage – explores her big strong strength. Have you ever watched a feminist try and take ‘hench’ as a compliment? It’s like watching a snake eatbut funny. 

BSO: French Delicacies Wednesday 28 October, Concert Hall, 7.30pm  Thierry Fischer conducts a programme that features Fauré’s effervescent Masques et Bergamasques suiteRavel’s equally exquisite orchestral version of Mother Goose and Saint-Saëns’ elegantly crafted Symphony No.2. * All BSO concerts this autumn will be available to watch from home, as digital livestream concerts direct from Lighthouse. 

An Evening with Kevin & Joanne Clifton Saturday 31 OctoberConcert Hall, 7.45pm In a show specially created for a socially distanced audience, Strictly Come Dancing’s Champion siblings share dance memories, songs from their CD and some of theifavourite Ballroom and Latin dances performed with their professional dance partners.
