ONLINE MONOLOGUE REVIEW: Curving The Rain - The Lockdown Theatre Company.
The first in a series of online pieces from The Lockdown Theatre Company, availble to watch for free on YouTube, is a heartfelt story from the pen of founding company member Rohan Candappa, titled, "Curving The Rain".
In this short monologue, Nicole Miners is a university student who goes on her daily run during lockdown. On the surface, she runs because she needs the release, the feel of the freedom and the wind, and yet the running has changed. She now has to "curve" her run to avoid other people, the spittle and sweat created from running has now become as bad as the virus itself and she understands the need to distance herself from others as she runs. She reflects on that and the situation in general.
However, you don't have to dig too deeply in order to understand many other complex emotions which intermingle with this. Her own familial situation, and why she hasn't travelled to another university away from her home. Her own fears and her her own "curving" of her life. As she rightly observes, everyone in life is either running away from or towards something.
Sympathetically and naturally told, Miners proved to be an engaging and realistic actress, working with a solid and truthful script, and sensitive diection.
