ONLINE MONOLOGUE REVIEW: Arthur - The Lockdown Theatre Company
Full marks and then some for this! Having watched the vast majority of the monologues in this series so far uploaded, I waited until last to watch this one because I knew it would be different... a picture of a Muppet-styled puppet rather than the actual performer.. this had to be special.. and it was!
Rather than a single monologue, this piece, titled simply 'Arthur' (the name of the eponymous puppet), has several short Victor Meldrew style rants about modern society. Voiced superbly by Mark Jefferis, pitching the timbre and accent to a 'Tee', Arthur likens TV's The Voice to the radio; talks about swearing, anal leakage, running, and a very pithy commentary on the welfare state in the final vignette, Kitty.
There is humour, social and political commentary, dealing with current issues superbly; the puppet here works superbly, the short pieces wouldn't have worked nearly as well had we seen a 'real' person, nor would the message have come across so succinctly either.
Brilliant!
