ONLINE THEATRE REVIEW: Night (The Beast Will Rise) - Philip Ridley - online
The latest Philip Ridley World Premiere online monologue in this series was a short 5-minute piece called 'Night', and was performed by Tyler Conti, and once again directed by Wiebke Green and in association with Southwark Playhouse.
It is night, and we are outside. A young man lies beneath a tree. he is using his mobile phone to record his own speech. The camera work shaky, out-of-focus, moving around, showing his surroundings and his obviously scared face. He has been running, from what we do not know. He is scared, of what, we do not know. His voice fades in and out as in real life, a mumble here and a coherent phrase there, all very quiet using only natural sound. It's all very real.. perhaps too real.
Although we still don't know why he is there and so frightened. He speaks of not wanting his parents to see him like this and him wanting them to see him peaceful and calm. We are told he has been stabbed. Again by whom and why we don't know. He's cold and in pain.
The final shot answers one of the questions, but not the others.
