FILM REVIEW: Genesis - Genieous Productions
A curious find on Youtube today was this 4 and a half minute short film titled 'Genesis' from Genieous Productions. Advertised as an abstract film, I was uncertain what to expect, and of course, with most abstract productions, the 'meaning' of the film can possibly be interpreted in various ways. However, when the film is called Genesis and the film quite clearly depicts the cycle of life, starting with water, the giver of life, whilst the soundtrack is Schubert 'Ave Maria' sung by a young boy treble, then there aren't that many different interpretations available!
There is no dialogue, and really no action of anything to speak of. Instead we are given a series of images. Water, the filling of a goldfish bowl, the emptying of said goldfish bowl, ink (poison) being poured into the bath, goldfish swimming around the legs of a man in the bath, the over-feeding of the goldfish, the over-filling of the goldfish bowl, and the eventual death of the goldfish. It's allegorical and imagery-full, but somehow also quite compelling.
The film was written and directed by Ben Escobar who also plays the man in the film too. And as if you needed any further clue to the 'meaning' behind the film, the man is credited in the end titles as 'God'.
A little surreal, a little self-aggrandising perhaps, but an intersting 5 minute diversion.
