ONLINE THEATRE REVIEW: The Twits - Unicorn Theatre, London.

In a special semi-staged reading of Roald Dahl'e fun children's book, 'The Twits', The Roald Dahl Story Company, in collaboration with The Unicorn Theatre in London brought together two fantastic performers, Martina Laird and Zuban Varla, to present this version to you online (on YouTube) spread very sensibly over three 20 minute videos.

Laird and Varla were delightful and playful in their interpretation of the text, with mischievousness and 'HugTight' glue aplenty!  Directed by Ned Bennett these three episodes formed the complete story from hairy-faced man start to upside-down come-uppance end.

The staging was simple but clever, with majority of the book being told 'Jackanory' style on two red velvet chairs in the centre of the stage, whilst intercut with this were small moments of action to break the monotony. Nice cinematography (if that's the correct word for this), combined with apt background music and a sense of fun from all creatives involved. The large drums of custard-like glue getting literally everywhere. What preteen could resist such a scenario?

Read with obvious delight with clear and articulate voices, the narrative became alive and interesting. A most wothwhile investment all round.
