ONLINE CHILDREN'S THEATRE REVIEW: The Little Fish - Little Angel Theatre

Once upon a time, in a town house in London, a kind, little old lady lived with her three pet fish. The large and lazy fish alone in his big bowl, the medium-sized pretty lady fish in the middle bowl, and a tiny black fish in the smallest bowl; all sitting on the window ledge. They all lived happily together until one day the little fish wanted to know more. He wanted to learn about the outside world, and go on an adventure. He wanted to see 'the big wide world'.

Little Angel Theatre's skill at crafting animated puppetry-based tales for the very young was once again evidenced here, as our protagonist little fish goes on a water-based journey talking to everything from rats and ducks to a large ocean-going liner. Of course danger lurks beneath the surface: playing with a pair of friendly mermaids is fun, but escaping from a hungry octopus or escaping the jaws of a shark is another thing altogether.

Of course, the kindly old lady comes along to rescue him and take him back home. The world is a wonderful and exciting place, but the best place to be is home, the narrator tells us.

The scenes are created and illustrated in a storybook fashion by Lyndie and Sarah Wright, whilst the narration is by Mike Shepherd. Shepherd's voice is clear and precise, and has a lovely delivery, natural and engaging; although I think the story and presentation would have benefitted greatly from actual sound and music effects rather than asking Shepherd to vocalise everything.
