THEATRE REVIEW: Scream Phone - Gilded Balloon Patter House, Edinburgh.

Think 'Scary Movie' mixed with 'Grease', add a touch of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and you've got 'Scream Phone'. An hour of revised '80's music, a simple but captivating storyline and three teenagers, each one trying to outdo the other with beauty, popularity and false sexual encounter stories.

This show makes fun of popular references, including itself and brought us into believing and trusting these stereotypical characters from the start, with clear intentions that were never underplayed.

Melody (Natasha Granger) is holding a sleepover for her two best friends, Janice (Kerrie Thomason) and Stacey (Alexandra Lewis). Granger plays Melody as the most confident, prettiest girl in school, and even with her scraggly hair, we are well invested into this persona because of Granger's slick comedy timing and eccentricity.

Janice, the quiet but sexually experienced one of the group appears to be a little slow, making the condom-eating scene a complete horrific hilarity. Thomason delivers a wonderful clown-like naturalism, which is a great contrast to Stacey, the far out, geeky baby of the group. Stacey's solo song is the peak of a fine character arch, Lewis's vocals are impressive and unexpected, the best I have seen at this year's Edinburgh Fringe.

Technically, the transitions between scenes were seamless, and the repeated sequences, including 'Beaver Babes' seemed to get bigger laughs every time. A comedy horror which leaves you wanting more, Scream Phone is a fantastic, slick, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser not to be missed.
