GASTRONOMY REVIEW: The new Waterside Terrace is opened at Pier Eight, The Lowry, Salford.

Time spent at The Lowry is always a treat, but now the experience has become even more delightful as Pier Eight, the Lowry’s stylish restaurant and bar, unveiled their spectacular Waterside Terrace yesterday. South facing, and overlooking the Manchester Ship Canal, it’s the perfect spot for some al fresco dining whether you’re looking for a pre-show meal or simply wanting to soak up the atmosphere of The Quays.

The brand new bar menu includes a variety of small plates, burgers, salad jars and snacks, which showcase local producers such as Beehive Food, 4Sisters, Seven Brothers and Lowry Ale. Executive Head Chef, Oliver Thomas and his team also supplement their dishes with vegetables, herbs, flowers and salad from their secret rooftop garden which was established last year, so when they say they champion local ingredients, they really mean local. Due to it’s position high up on the roof of the theatre, the garden, which started out as a bit of an experiment, sadly won’t ever be open to the public. However a number of us were lucky enough to be given a sneaky peak when Mike Lee, Pier Eight’s manager took us for a tour yesterday during the launch event. Clearly the restaurant team’s enthusiasm for the garden is paying off as the produce is flourishing, with fabulous crops of mint, rosemary, borage, radish, fennel, courgettes, carrots, and nasturtium, amongst others, being grown in old recycled fish boxes.

Back down on the terrace The Lowry’s own Rob King was serenading invited guests and Lowry volunteers as they sampled tasters from the new menu and enjoyed drinks in the sunshine. Unsurprisingly, King’s monthly Gin and Jazz afternoons in the Pier Eight bar are proving hugely popular, and will be even more so now that his amazing vocals can be enjoyed from the terrace.

If you’d like to sample the new bar menu this summer, guests to the Waterside Terrace can enjoy 4 small plates and 2 drinks for only £18. Food is available Monday – Friday 12pm-3pm & 5pm - 7.30pm on show nights, and Saturday & Sunday 12pm -7.30pm. With such a fabulous venue and delicious food I can guarantee that spaces on the terrace will be highly sought after.
